The Roanoke Center
We believe that homegrown businesses provide economic stability and prosperity. They are the lifeblood of our region. The Roanoke Center is an innovative community and business resource that promotes technology-based economic development. It serves Bertie, Gates, Halifax, Hertford and Northampton counties.
Our mission is to catalyze, strengthen and support sustainable economic and community development in the region by:
- Promoting the use of technology
- Building wealth through increased knowledge, jobs and income opportunities
- Building the capacities of grassroots communities, organizations and individuals
Through technology, we believe small businesses can:

- Work more efficiently
- Access new customers
At the Roanoke Center we offer:
- FREE tax preparation
- Mentoring and training for community volunteers who want to help students stay in school.
- Seminars on social security, banking, home-buying, and saving money.
- Speakers who are available to attend community events and functions and speak on financial literacy.
- Office space and meeting space for groups.
- FREE internet access in our computer lab.
- Business services such as faxing, laminating, business counseling, business plan preparation, and much, much more.
- Software training such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
We also administer several local programs such as:
- Communities In Schools of the Northeast - a mentoring program
- VITA-EITC - volunteer income tax assistance and earned income tax credit
- ACE - Achieving Career Excellence - a women's economic equity project
